Advanced Traffic Flow
Management Concepts

Tomorrow's National Airspace System is agile,
flexible, more performant, and more reliable.

Dynamic Airspace (DA) is part of the vision for tomorrow where the National Airspace System is agile and flexible, more performant, and more reliable. Dynamic Airspace allows airspace management facilities to fully or partially hand a portion of airspace to another facility to mitigate against high traffic levels or technical issues. This allows the system to be more resilient to anomalies and more efficient overall.

Instead of each Center’s operation and configuration being set locally and in isolation, facilities can more easily share their configurations and coordinate with others in a shared ecosystem. Flight, voice, and surveillance data can be redirected to other facilities to allow them to remotely manage the traffic outside of their normal jurisdiction. ATC services can more easily be distributed evenly across controller workstations as needed.

Our Role

To mature these concepts and promote their adoption across the globe, Concepts Beyond has:

  • Defined the Concept of Operation (CONOPS) of Dynamic Airspace
  • Identified and Evaluated the data elements necessary to support the transfer of airspace (Surveillance, Voice, Flight)
  • Explored potential future paths for these data elements to support a cloud environment
  • Developed DART, a key function needed for DA implementation (see more below)

DART

Dynamic Airspace Reallocation Tool

Concepts Beyond conceptualized and developed the DART that enables the Air Traffic Control System Command Center (ATCSCC) to coordinate the transfer of airspace from one facility to another to enable Dynamic Airspace.
