Trajectory Based Operations / Future Flight Planning & Filing

“Tomorrow’s National Airspace System” touts
better system communication, increased flexibility,
more cohesion amongst different
operations, and improved safety.

TBO

Today's Air Traffic Control is generally operated in a reactionary fashion whereby aircraft that look like they will not maintain the required separation are deconflicted (redirected) by the controller to prevent an issue (referred to as tactical deconfliction). These happen most often in areas that are constrained in their usable airspace (choke points), or areas that regularly see high volumes of traffic.

To reduce wait times, delays, and increase predictability, the concept of Trajectory Based Operations (TBO) is being adopted to enable aircraft to be managed in a more orchestrated and planned manner. Under TBO, each aircraft will have an accurately predicted 4D trajectory (3D position and time) that will map the aircraft's path from their departure gate to their arrival gate.

An accurate 4D trajectory allows collaboration between air traffic control and airlines to strategically (planned ahead for) and tactically (reactionary) deconflict aircraft around airspace constraints and weather hazards. This results in some other benefits, including:

  • Greater predictability
  • Improved Collaborative Decision Making (CDM)
  • More efficient routing
  • Improved fuel efficiency
  • Reduced delays
FF-ICE

"Flight and Flow – Information for a Collaborative Environment" (FF-ICE) is a paradigm that describes the types of information that will need to be exchanged for the coordination required for TBO. These 4D trajectories and flight planning messages are information-rich, enabling more accurate prediction of traffic status hours ahead. The System Wide Information Management (SWIM) system was developed to provide a means for air service providers and airspace users to share and obtain the information they need in a timely manner, improving the decision making by early planning of assets using detailed and live predictive data.

Our Role

To mature these concepts and promote their adoption across the globe, Concepts Beyond has:

  • Developed the Data Governance Module (DGM) to validate the information exchanged to ensure they conform to standard schemas and business rules
  • Conducted data governance working groups
  • Participated in architecture development
  • Conducted multiple demonstration activities
